5 Companies to Apartment Fire
Fri. Oct 2nd 2009

Initial dispatch for Companies 1, 2 and 7 for a structure fire. Before units marked en route Farmville Dispatch advised that there was heavy fire showing per callers. Farmville 107 requested a 4th Company be put on the assignment; Company 4 was dispatched.

With units en route dispatch advised that evacuations were in progress, initial report was that all persons were evacuated, however this information was changed to there might be one person unaccounted for on the top floor. At this point Farmville 106 requested a 5th company; Company 6 was dispatched.

Truck 1 on the scene with a 4 story garden style apartment complex with heavy fire showing through the roof. Time: 0505

At this time there was still a report of entrapment on the 4th floor A/D apartment, a crew comprising of Company 2 members searched the apartments on the A/D corner as well as the C/D corner. These searches proved negative. Time: 0508

During the initial searches Engine 2-2 was establishing a water supply via hydrant and was stretching a 4" supply line to the rear of Truck-1. Truck 1 was positioned at the A/D corner of the fire building. Truck 1 crews were also establishing a secondary 4" water supply from a hydrant located on the D side of the fire building.

Once primary searches of the fire floor were completed and crews were safely away from the structure, ladder pipe operations were commenced in an initial defensive operation. Fire conditions at the time did not permit active fire suppression activities from within the structure. Water on the fire via Truck 1 ladder pipe at 0511.

Also, Engine 7-2 and Truck 2 were securing a hydrant for water supply, once this was established Truck 2 began flowing their ladder pipe. Truck 2 was positioned at the A/B corner of the structure.

*Note- Only the Alpha side of the structure was accessible by apparatus, the terrain sloped down away from the building and ground ladders were used to access all other sides of the structure.

Company 6 members were assigned to the C side of the structure with a 2 1/2 gate down line for fire attack on the C Side. At this time they secured the electrical utility boxes.

While Company 6 members were operating on the C side, Company 1 & 2 members noticed a person standing in a D side window. A ground ladder was placed to this window and the person was removed with no injuries. The subject stated that he did not hear any of the audible fire alarms or any of the evacuation commands. He was turned over to PEVRS units on scene for evaluation.
